DATE:     1989/90

TIME:      Overcast Afternoon

LOCATION: Near the Carns community in Jackson, County Alabama

TERRAIN:     Swampy

OBSERVED:    Out for a walk in the creek bottom with my dog (part Lab) and following a branch of the creek up stream.  As approaching a bend in the creek, my dog who up to this time was casually running around but never letting me out of her sight.(very protective)  I started to get a weird, eerie feeling and at that same moment my dog stopped running and of beyond the bend, I heard a loud splash.  My dog then ran over to where I was at and pressed her body against my leg and with her fur up on it's ends, let out a growl unlike nothing I never heard from her before.  It was as if she felt that she had to protect me.  Suddenly, she took off running and disappeared behind the bend.  I yelled out to her and took off after her.  I got to her on the other side of the bend in the creek and saw her with a fixed stare into a nearby overgrown thicket of brush.  Her fur was still up and she was growling but also very nervous.  I was getting a little sick at the odor that was permeating the area.  It smelled like a dozen skunks sprayed at once.  I noticed in the water that the creek bottom had been stirred up and on both sides of the creek there were huge slide like marks and near me was a stump of a young tree that had the marking of being broken off.  A little ways in the water, I saw what had to be the rest of the young tree floating.  Felling very uncomfortable, I called to my dog and we left the area with me looking over my shoulder every few steps.

ACTIVITIES OF WITNESS(ES):  Been just casually walking along the edge of the creek with my dog.

DESCRIPTION OF CREATURE:  Didn't see one but smelled a fowl odor like a dozen skunks spraying at once., This area was located right behind the farm that my grandfather grew up on.  Never heard of anything such as this though many people in this area don't talk about things such as this.  Now for as long as I can remember, whenever we'd fish on this creek near the area my grandfather called the "swimming hole" way off in the distant somewhere, I hear a couple of splashing sounds like someone was tossing limbs, rocks, and so forth into the water but it never bothered me and we always had dogs with us and they never seemed to be bothered by those splashing sounds either.

OTHER NOTES: I didn't hear any birds in that area of the creek like I did when my dog and I first started walking along the creek. Up until that day, I never walk along that branch of the creek.  I usually stayed near the "swimming hole" or walked down stream to where I had a tree stand for deer hunting.
