TIME:          7:40  A.M.

LOCATION:   Highway 17 (Colorado), midway up the 5-mile grade
                 rising from a small bridge over the Conejos River to
                 La Manga Pass (elevation 10,230 ft). We were at just
                 above 9,000 ft in altitude. Conejos County
 

TERRAIN:    National Forrest
 

OBSERVED:    I was doing a long run with a friend of mine. We were in south central Colorado, running along Highway 17 through the Grande National Forest toward Chama, NM. As we neared the CO/NM border, Highway 17 began snaking up a steep five mile grade beginning at the Conejos River and cresting at La Manga Pass (10,230ft).

Midway up the grade, we decided to take a short break since we had been climbing constantly and had just passed 9,000 ft in altitude (I was wearing a watch that gave altitude readings). Stopping alongside the road, the people driving our support vans, one in front of us and one behind, pulled over also, turned off their vehicles and got out.

It was quite cold as our group of four stood at the roadside, enjoying the view of the valley below (Conejos River) the elevation afforded us. The morning was unusually quiet (the only other people we'd seen that morning were in a car headed opposite the way we were traveling some 30 minutes earlier), with a very light snow just beginning to fall. As I was about to take a sip of Gatorade, I caught the eye of my fellow runner, both of us feeling a bit "empowered" by the climb at altitude, gave him a mock look of fatigue, tongue wagging, which he responded to by letting out a loud "whoop".

The echoes of the "whoop", resounding through the valley below, had barely begun to fade when, from within the dense woods JUST below us, came a VERY loud and threatening animalistic roar. (Before I continue, I'd like to add that I've seen and/or encountered most land mammals living on the North American continent and this, I assure you, was nothing I know to exist.) Following a brief pause, there was another bone chilling roar, a pause, and then a final roar.

Based on the sheer volume of the roars and the feeling that registered within me, the hair on the back of my neck stood on end and the immediate urge to relieve myself became overwhelming. However, being a somewhat rational person, I looked at my friend and in lieu of soiling my running pants, said the most intelligent thing that came to mind. Namely, "What the HELL was that?" He didn't answer but, needless to say, with minimal discussion the break was over, our crew jumped back into their respective vehicles and we runners, in classic fight versus flight mode, despite the altitude, headed on up the mountain at a good clip toward the pass!

Regarding the "roars":

The sound was a cross between a growl and a scream. The volume, which was amplified to a degree as it echoed, was simply amazing. I honestly don't think a human being could
make a sound like that or make a sound that loud.

Each roar lasted around 5-6 seconds with the pause in between shorter (3-4 seconds). The tone of the roar was threatening (territorial) and I believe, in response to the "whoop" my friend emitted.

Activities of Witness:    As I indicated above, we were taking a break at roadside, enjoying the view of the national forestlands surrounding us.

Other Notes:      I have looked at various bigfoot related websites and have seen quite a few reports from this part of the country (CO/NM), particularly in the Conejos County area (Rio Grande National Forest).

I have also seen numerous reports, including one that really struck a chord with me on your website (TEXAS BIGFOOT - Strange happenings involving local Deer Hunters and Bigfoot, posted 9/1/2000), where an alleged bigfoot responds vocally, in a territorial fashion, to "whoops" made by humans.
 

Other Other Notes:    The members of our group, the two runners and two support group members, took to jokingly(?) referring to whatever it was we heard on the mountain as "back when we heard bigfoot".

On a more serious note, since my friend is 100% Native American and I am part Native American, the longs run(s) we did had there foundation in many things deemed spiritual to Native peoples. Without saying more, I will add that when I asked my friend directly, what he thought we heard that day, his answer was:
"Subject in the Wild: Wise Mountain Spirit (a greeting welcome at the gateway of shrine)"...
