TIME:     early afternoon

LOCATION:   Collier County, Florida

TERRAIN:    Wooded

OBSERVED:    The other day I was in the Picayne Strand State Forest with a friend to find a good fishing spot. We were walking down a trail, scanning the area, when a ape stepped out. We noticed the animal before it saw us. Once the animal spotted us it retreated slowly into the woods. We then picked up large stones as a last line of defense. Both my friend and I slowly backed away, once we felt we were at a safe distance we noticed the animal examining us from behind a tree. It was peering around a tree trunk and branches. The animal did not threaten us in any way, it seems to be a very curious, investigative, and elusive animal. The ape stood about 7 - 71/2 ft. tall. It had reddish/brown matted hair covering 2/3 of its body. The head and neck was covered in a short brownish hair. The face seemed to have no hair what so ever and was a brownish black. Its arms extended below the waste line and it had a body that of a body builder. We were down wind from the animal, but it had no foul odor associated with the "skunk ape". We then proceeded down the trail and noticed that there was torn up remains of an adult black bear. We walked around and found the rest of the bear in an opening that had branches and grass bundled up, which seemed to be a possible resting area for the animal or animals (the apes). We had no cameras at the time, usually I do not carry a camera when I go fishing, and obviously I did not expect to see what I saw.
I am an environmental/biology student from New Jersey that moved to Florida to escape the cold. I have worked with animals varying from reptiles to primates in both zoo and wild settings. I have traveled all around the world and have seen many primate and ape species. This animal that we saw had very similar features as other primates or apes but I would not say its of any species we know of. I am going to be setting up trap and video cameras to try and capture hard evidence of its existence. I know what I saw and know probably I wont see it again, but you never know.

Activities of Witness:   N/A

Description of Creature:  N/A

Other Notes:    I will not give the exact location of the animal or of its "resting area" due to the fact I do not want any one going out there to capture or kill the animal. This animal has not bothered any human beings to documented knowledge. It has been around for thousands of years and we should give it the same respect as we would another human being.

Other (Informational or Encounter History in the General Area) Notes:    Yes, I believe so.  I believe local native tribes of the area has seen something similar to this for thousands of years. I also believe other recent sightings, within the past 20 years, has been associated with the general area.

Additional Notes and or Follow up Comments N/A
