DATE:    11/15/09

TIME:     1:30 pm approx..

LOCATION:   Clayton County, Iowa

TERRAIN:    Rocky terrain/wooded/deep spring fed creek valley

OBSERVED:    As I said below I had been deeper into this valley than I had been in the past. I was on my way back to my car when I decided to try tree knocking. I picked up a large limb and smacked it against a tree 4 to 5 times, it echoed through the valley. I waited a few seconds and knocked again.  About 5 seconds later I heard a distant reply, I froze in disbelief my heart started to race. The knocking in reply was getting closer and closer. This animal was extremely fast.  This animal was knocking on trees and racing towards my location.  Like a dummy instead of diving in the trees behind me I ran towards the creek bed about 30 seconds and heard nothing.  I raised my hand in the air and knocked 3 times on the fallen tree, instantaneously the creature let out a bellowing scream. It sounded almost like a screaming woman. This scream was so loud I could almost feel the vibrations. This scream echoed throughout the valley.  The creature then slammed his stick against his tree in a very violent manner 5-6 times. I was not scared as I determined the creature was probably 500 to 600 yards away and 300 ft above my local. I have been close to these creatures before and this is the first time I felt even a little aggression from them. I stood up shaking and determined the creature had come from an adjoining creek bed to my south. Since I had walked past the creek bed 4-5 hours earlier and was in the general area for about 6 hours I can only come to the conclusion he was deep back in the creek bed and did not detect me, which is rare. I walked back to my car and went home.

Additional things: Nothing else was heard or observed the rest of the trip.

Activities of Witness:   This was the 3rd. trip to this area to investigate. I arrived around 7:30 AM with the plans to follow the creek bed deeper than I ever had. I followed the creek bed approx.  2 to 3 miles in taking my time at various times to climb each side of the valley and explore the cliffs and rock formations. I also took a quick nap and ate lunch. It was on my way back that the incident occurred. Weather was in the upper 30's to lower 40's and fairly windy.

Description of Creature:  Animal not observed only heard
