DATE:    Around 1983

TIME:     Late Evening / Early Morning

LOCATION:   Dallas County, Iowa

TERRAIN:    N/A

OBSERVED:    This is a story told to me by a friend of mine when we were in junior high, around 1983.  The location would be in Dallas County, Iowa.

This is, unfortunately, a third hand story, but my friend told it to me and obviously believed it so I am passing it on to you with as much detail as I can remember and you can do what you like with it.

My friend told me that a family friend had told her family one day of an encounter he had had with what he believed was a bigfoot.  The witness, who lived in the area, was awakened in the late evening/early morning hours by his dog barking.  After putting up with it for a few minutes, he got out of bed and looked out the window to see what the commotion was all about, thinking there was a raccoon or something setting the dog off.  The witness had a second floor bedroom and when they looked out from their upstairs window he saw a tall, heavyset figure leaning with its back to a large tree in the back yard (this person said it reminded him of a bear scratching its back on a tree) about twenty feet from the house.  Because it was a dark night they could not see it well but thought it was breathing heavily or panting and judging from comparing it to the tree, the witness thought it was close to eight feet tall.  At first, the witness thought it was a person trespassing until they realized the size of it was much larger than a person would be.  It did not seem to take much notice of the barking dog, who was chained up in the back yard near the back door.

After watching it for a minute or two, the witness went away from the window for a few moments to put on a robe and go to another room to get another vantage point to see if they could get a better look, but by the time they got to another window the figure was gone.

My friend believed the report and did not think the witness was someone who would make something like this up, and said when the witness told it he did not give any indication that it was a joke or prank of any sort and told it in complete seriousness.  I should point out that there are no bears or other large animals in the area - the largest animals we have would be cows, horses, or deer and it would be difficult to mistake one of those for an eight foot tall bigfoot from thirty feet away, even on a very dark night.

As I said, this is just my relaying of a secondhand report told to me nearly 25 years ago, so this is all the detail I have about it.  If you have questions about it, feel free to ask although I'm afraid I'm unlikely to be much help with providing any additional details beyond what I've written here.
