DATE:    08/14/02

TIME:     Afternoon

LOCATION:   Parke County, Indiana, Roaring Creek near Turkey Run State Park

TERRAIN:       Wooded

OBSERVED:       My wife and I were on honeymoon.  I have been going to this area with my family for the last 15+/- years and have had similar occurrences over the years. This time it seemed to click.

We were fishing in a creek when we both got the feeling that we were being watched. As we continued to fish and listen we soon discerned definate bi-pedal walking sounds back up among the evergreens on the oneside of the creek as well as in the thick deciduous scrub on the other side. The presence on the evergreen side seemed to stay in one place for probably an hour or so before finally moving down stream & likely crossing to meet up with the other. The other was on the deciduous side. This presence seemed to make a whistle noise which we best describe as being like a kid blowing on a wooden flute or tin whistle. Not much variation beyond some difference in length of the call. This kept moving about on the ridge and among the scrub behind us. It too finally seemed to stop moving & stay somewhere behind us. (We later found a spot where it appeared something had been sitting watching us from the brush above and behind us.)

There was some more movement after an hour or so when the presence behind us moved on upstream towards a road & bridge. There then came a noise which we at first thought was a car skidding in the turns on the road. We changed our mind when we realized that the noise was moving across the brush behind us at a quick rate accompanied by the sound of something going through the brush. The final call in the series (there were 3 such calls or noises) clearly tapered off more like something running out of wind rather than an actual skid.

Throughout this whole series of events, there was a recurring sound which is best described as a branch being occasionally beaten against a tree. This sound came from both sides of the creek. This sound happened in single isolated smacks though once there was a double whack.

It was after this final call that the presence across the stream moved downstream also & seemed to cross over past the turn in the creek. After the departure of both of them the birds did again begin to return and could be heard singing. Previously there was only the above noted sound as well as one startled alarm call from a blue jay & cicadas... lottsa cicadas.. but that's Indiana in August for you.

I wandered down the creek bed and found a partial footprint in the gravel.  I didn't make a cast of it since we didn't have any material to do so (rather didn't expect this).

My family goes there often as we have for years. My wife and I have not mentioned this to the rest of the family as they'd likely not take well to such talk especially concerning an area which we so regularly frequent.

ACTIVITIES OF WITNESSES:    Hiking and fishing

DESCRIPTION OF CREATURE:

OTHER NOTES:

OTHER SIGHTINGS IN THIS AREA:   Don't know for others.  My family and I have had similar occurrences before but they just never registered until this time.
