TIME:     7:30 am

LOCATION:   Jefferson County, Kentucky

TERRAIN:    Wooded

OBSERVED:    In 1965 my parents bought the old house on Stone street Rd. that my mother grew up in. I was 15 at the time.  I caught the school bus every morning to Valley High School.  The bus went up Stone street over the small (no longer extant) little bridge in the direction of Valley Station Rd. to Valley High on Dixie Highway.  In 1967, the little bridge was deemed no longer safe enough to support a vehicle as heavy as a school bus, so the bus route was re-routed back through Blevins Gap from Dixie Hwy. and over to Manslick Rd. to 3rd St. Rd.  Because I was the only student to be picked up in this area, and because there was no place for the school bus to turn around, I had to walk about two miles by myself to the intersection of Stone street Rd. and Blevin's Gap Rd. to catch the school bus.  One morning (and the date I give is approximate, but I remember it was early fall and leaves were still on the trees) I was walking to the intersection to catch the bus.  I felt a strange presence.  Granted, a kid of 17 has an imagination, but this thing I saw and I heard was as real as anything.  I heard a grunting noise.  It was a very deep, throaty grunt.  Not like a pig; much more nasal than that, almost metallic sounding.  Being that this area was all woods and farmland in those days, I figured it was someone's escaped hog or cow or even a big dog.  I walked faster, and this thing walked faster, keeping up with me.  I could hear it brushing through the woods and grunting.  Then I saw it cross the road into the woods adjacent to Blevin's Gap, as Blevin's Gap goes up the hill and curves around back toward Bearcamp Rd.  I was running at this point.  It started running also.  I could hear it keeping up with me.  The thing I saw was black or very dark brown, and at first I didn't think it had a head, as it was loping along on what appeared to be four very long legs.  Its head was apparently bent down.  It was loping, and I could see its powerful, big shoulders doing most of the work, as it moved along.  I was convinced it was a gorilla that had escaped from a circus or something, because of the loping movement as it moved along.  I ran to my friend's house up Blevin's Gap and they were shocked at the terror on my face.  They said I was white as a sheet.  I was so scared.  I told my uncles who used to hunt and trap back in those woods, and they said, oh that is old bigfoot or the hairy man.  I had never heard of such a creature before and said, no I was sure it was a gorilla.  But the reason I am telling this now is that I just read the account of someone who saw such a creature near Jefferson Memorial Forest in 1997-98.  And that is exactly the area where I saw this creature.  I have recently seen shows on TV where it says the creature screams a high-pitched scream, but this didn't scream like that at all.  It was a grunting noise.  And, although I didn't see it actually standing on two legs upright, I believe it could have.  And if it had stood up, I am guessing it would be about 6 - 7 feet tall.  Looks like "hairy man" is still around out there in Valley Station.
