DATE:    Oct-1976

TIME:     4:30 am

LOCATION:   Fort Knox, Kentucky,

LOCATION 2  Fort Knox, Army Base,

TERRAIN:    Wooded

OBSERVED:    I was 17 years old in US Army basic training at FT. Knox Kentucky and we

were spending three days in the woods for "bivouac" training. Our tents

were set up in a circular fashion in a small clearing. It was pre-dawn, about

0400 to 0430 Hrs.  My training company and I had walked approx 100 yards through

moderate brush, away from our encampment to eat breakfast before we marched off

to the rifle ranges. It wes quite cold outside that morning and was threatening

to rain.I had forgotten my gloves in my "pup" tent and fearing

punishment for my forgetfullness by the drill sergeants, I told a buddy that I

was going to run back to the tent area to retrieve them. I figured that I would

be right back, and the drill sergeants would never miss me.I took off through the

woods by myself in the dark,as no flash lights were allowed due to

"tactical" issues. As I located and approached my tent, from a distance

of about 6 to 8 feet, I observed what appeared to be a person on the other

side, bent over at the waist in some tall grass, looking for something. I

initially thought that it was one of the other recruits and maybe he had also

forgetten something in his "hooch". At that time I said"hey you

better hurry, they're about to take off in a few minutes". (referring to the

rest of the training company). There was no response. I was puzzled, and I stood

there and repeated myself. Still no response. At that point I raised my voice

and said "HEY"! At that time I observed the figure to stand

upright, facing me. It was about 6'4" to 6'6" in height, but I was not

able to make out any features at the time, due to the darkness. I immediately

started to get the "creeps",but still not knowing who I had confronted

I stood there looking at it,and it appeard to be looking at me. This went on for

only about 10 seconds, then it began to slowly sway from side to side. Suddenly

a faint light struck the figure. I Think that the light came from one of the

trucks that had brought our breakfast that morning,as it was turning around to

leave the area, about 100 yards away. The light illuminated the dark figure for

only about a second, if that. Long enough. In ,that second and from no more than

8' away,I observed this creature to have hair which was similar in color and

texture to that of an "irish setter" dog, which covered it's upper

body. Due to the tall grass and the tent between us,I was unable to see it's

legs.It also had black or very dark eyes and was humanlike, yet not, and it did

not appear to have a distinct neck.It did not make any sound. I tried to

convince myself that it was a bear, and I would have somehow been relieved if it

had been, but it wasn't. I slowly began to back away from the tent in an effort

to get out of there without alarming this thing. After about three steps I

panicked, turned and ran back through the woods toward the rest of the

recruits, having never got my gloves. I looked back to see if it was giving

chase, but never saw it again. I initially tried to tell the guys what had just

happened, but I was turning into a laughing stock and I soon just stopped trying.

Late that afternoon we returned to the encampment area and I checked for signs

of the creature but found nothing. Worst thing about it, we still had two more

nights to stay out there, but I didn't see anything else of it after that.Oh

yeah,as for me forgetting my gloves, there were consequences.
