DATE:    May 1989

TIME:     7:00 am

LOCATION:   Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana

TERRAIN:    Wooded

OBSERVED:    This is actually two events (1989/1990). The first one occurred in one area of the forest and the second in another section of the forest.

When I was in my early twenties, I got into art school and had decided that I would commune with nature on occasion and go out and try and paint trees and clouds and the forest. My family lives in Shreveport, where I grew up. But I would go out into the deeper areas of some of the nearby National forest in the late 1980's to camp and paint. I've camped and painted all over the western and central Louisiana areas, and in some pretty wild places. I generally was trying to find remnants of the old hardwood bottom land in the state. Anyway, on several of these camping trips, I've felt and heard strange things I could not explain. I've been walking through woods looking at trees, when I would be overwhelmed by horrible odors, or the forest would turn silent. I've seen dead bodies of dogs torn up on logging roads or in backwoods areas, and heard sounds, or wailing's like an elk or really large animal might make howling. Usually nothing bothers me in the woods, but a couple things have happened that did.

Second strange thing was when I was camped near XXXXX, LA in a swamp area. I had finished a painting of the setting sun over pine trees and it was getting really dark. There was an old abandoned bridge that had collapsed into the swamp, and I liked the mystery of the area, so made my tent next to the water of the swamp near that bridge in an old hunters campground. I cooked some fajitas, and it was about midnight when I finished, when I heard something huge hit the water next to my tent, which was next to the swamp water. Whatever it was made a huge splash which flew up next to the bank and my tent. I didn't panic as I figured it was a gator or something who didn't like me being there. Each time it happened though it look like either rocks or pieces of wood were hitting the water, but I couldn't tell. About that time this wild creature came running out of the woods full steam heading towards me....as if it was being chased. It was a wild dog, but was so scared, it actually ran through my camp.

Lastly, I've been asleep in woods where I would hear owls hooting then something loud and wailing like an owl but so strange, it stopped the owls themselves, and sounded like a gurgling monkey. The sounds I remember are like a bunch of zoo chimps when agitated and they all start howling, but more of a hoo-wow....really fast, repeated really fast and alien sounding...and mournful.

Anyway, great site, and I will say, Louisiana has some wild mysterious places, and after reading some of your reports, and remembering my own experiences all alone in those mysterious woods, I know there is something out there not normal.

Activities of Witness:   sleeping in a tent, at 7 am. running noise on the logging road so loud it woke me up! Sounded like someone jogging really fast, which turned off the main road, jogged right past my tent, and kept running.
