OBSERVED:
My
husband and I participate in Civil War Reenactments. In the spring
of
1998,
we were attending a reenactment of the Battle of Pleasant Hill, LA.
Because
I have young children, I chose not to camp out like the men and
instead
rented a hotel room in the closest town, Mansfield, LA. After the
days
activities, I packed up my two little girls and my dog
and
headed on back to Mansfield.
The
drive from Pleasant Hill to Mansfield is along Hwy 175 and is surrounded
by the piney woods on each side associated with East Texas and that part
of Louisiana. It's only a 20 mile drive but the road winds a bit
with several bends. I say it was
approximately
11:30 pm when I left the Pleasant Hill camp site on a Saturday night.
I couldn't really say how far we had gone but I was driving with my high
beams on. I was driving 50 or 55 as I rounded a bend in the road
when my lights hit "something" on the side of the road next to a dead fall
of trees.
This "something" was bent over what appeared to be an object in it's lap or in front of it's chest. I still clearly remember my immediate thoughts "There is a man killing something!" mainly because their was a up and down motion that seemed to be related to whatever it was holding in it's arms. Instantly this "something" stopped the motion that had attracted my attention and looked my way.
I
slowed down to get a better look in case it was a person hurt. This
"something" eyes reflected the light in such a way that I changed my initial
reaction from man to
animal.
I don't recall the color exactly but a white yellow reflection seems right.
I could not see a face nor shape of it's head but noted that the body was
covered in hair which seemed silverish gray. Now an "animal"
in my mind I saw it rock back on it's back legs as if to stand yet still
seemed be holding whatever it was in front of it's body. At that
second, my curiosity changed to fear and I quickly sped up to pass.
I don't know how long I saw it maybe 30 seconds at the most but my children also saw it on the side of the road and exclaimed "Mom, what is that?". They were afraid and when I slowed down, they begged me to hurry past it. My dog made low growling noises and raised his hackles on his back; however, I attribute this to his perception of fear in me and the children more than anything else. My mind was racing processing details for an logical explanation. "Not a man, an animal because of the eyes and fur.
It
was large and seemed to be holding something which I now think was a smaller
animal ..maybe feeding. A dog? To big for even the biggest
of dogs. A coyote? Bigger than that even. A wolf..maybe
but man sized?. Definitely no bears around here." I told the children
it was a wolf which satisfied them; however, the position of the upper
body when I first saw it rock back and the shape of the back legs
gave me doubt. Was my mind playing tricks on me? I think I
sped up because I was afraid it would stand on two legs and I didn't want
to see that. At no point did the term
"bigfoot"
or anything similar run through my mind. Mostly I kept coming
back
to a "man".
The
next morning I headed back towards Pleasant Hill and I stopped briefly
on
the side of the road where I thought I had seen my "wolf-man". I
could
find
nothing and I'm not even sure it was the right spot because it was so
very
dark the night before. I did ask a few people in Pleasant Hill if
there
were wolves in the area..most couldn't say one way or another..it was
possible
considering the wooded areas. I wasn't going to tell a soul about
what
we had seen, but the girls did tell their father on our way home.
By
this
time in the light of day it was a grand adventure to them. When I
mentioned
the actions and size that reminded me of a man but contradicted
the
reflected eyes and fur of an animal..my husband caulked it up to the
night
playing tricks on my eyes. Maybe so.
