DATE:    01/07/03

TIME:    5:30PM-6:15PM

LOCATION:   MISSISSIPPI, WINSTON COUNTY

TERRAIN:   Swampy

OBSERVED:   I HAD BEEN DEER HUNTING IN THE AREA MOST OF THE DAY AND DUE TO SOME DOGS RUNNING THROUGH THE AREA I HAD DECIDED TO MOVE TO ANOTHER STAND OVER LOOKING A GREEN FIELD ABOUT A HALF A MILE TO THE SOUTH IN THE BOTTOMS.REACHING THE STAND AROUND 4:30PM I CLIMBED UP (AROUND 15 FEET) AND SAT DOWN,I HAD NOT BEEN THERE VERY LONG WHEN I NOTICED A UNFAMILIAR MUSKY ODOR NOT BEING ABLE TO FIND WHERE THE SMELL WAS COMING FROM I BLAMED IT ON THE DEER COVER SCENTS I HAD IN MY BACKPACK. SHORTLY AFTER THIS A VERY SMALL DOE CAME INTO THE FIELD, IT BEING TO SMALL TO SHOOT I WAITED HOPING IT HAD LARGER FRIENDS, SO I SAT THERE FOR AWHILE WITH NO LUCK AND LITTLE LITE LEFT I FIGURED IF I CAN'T SHOOT THIS LITTLE LADY I WOULD HAVE SOME FUN WITH HER INSTEAD, SO I SLOWLY REMOVED MY BACKPAC AND RETREIVED A BOTTLE OF "DOE IN HEAT" AND A DOE BLEET CALL, MISTING THE TREES AROUND ME WITH THE STUFF I THEN STARTED IN WITH THE DOE BLEET WITHIN A FEW MINITES OF THIS I HEARD SOMETHING COMING THROUGH THE WOODS AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED THINKING IT WAS A DEER I  GOT READY JUST IN TIME TO SEE THE DOGS THAT HAD MESSED UP MY HUNTING EARLIER THAT DAY RUN THROUGH THE GREEN FIELD WITH THEIR TAILS BETWEEN THEIR LEGS AS IF BEING CHASED BY SOMETHING. (THEY DIDN'T EVEN BARK NOT ONCE EVEN WHEN THEY ENTERED THE FIELD WITH THE DEER STANDING IN IT.) WITH ALL THE NOISE FROM THE DOGS RUNNING THOUGH AND IT STARTING TO GET DARK I CALLED IT A DAY.BUT IN THE PROCESS OF PUTTING THE BLEET BACK IN MY PACK  I GAVE IT ONE MORE TRY AND GOT SOMETHINGS ATTENTION REAL QUICK, I COULD HERE IT OF TO MY RIGHT TAKING HEAVY STEPS AND BREAKING LIMBS AND WHEN IT GOT TO THE EDGE OF THE WOODS IT STOPPED, BEING THIS TIME OF DAY IT WAS ALMOST INPOSIBLE TO SEE INTO THE WOODS SO I (STILL THINKING THIS IS A DEER) I GAVE THE DOE BLEET ONE MORE TURN, THE INSTANT THE BLEET STOPPED SOMETHING LET OUT THE MOST CHILLING SCREAM THAT MADE EVERY HAIR ON MY NECK STAND ON END. NOW I GREW UP HUNTING AND HAVE HEARD EVERYTHING YOU CAN THINK OF FROM PANTHERS TO SCREECH OWLS AND THIS WAS NONE OF THE ABOVE, AND  THIS THING WAS STANDING A STONES THROW AWAY FROM ME. SO STILL SEATED IN MY STAND I JUST FROZE THINKING IF I CAN'T SEE IT MOVE MAYBE I CAN HEAR IT AND SHOOT IN IT'S GENERAL AREA SO WHAT EVER THE HELL THIS THING IS WOULD LEAVE SO I COULD TOO.  I SAT THEIR FOR A MOMENT TRYING TO SEE OR HEAR SOMETHING  WHEN I CAUGHT SOMETHING MOVE OUT OF THE CORNER OF MY EYE STANDING ABOUT 40 YARDS IN FRONT OF MY STAND IN A SMALL CLEARING. IT WAS THIS BIG BLACK MASS SWAYING BACK AND FORTH, NOT REALLY BELIEVEING WHAT I WAS SEEING( AND NOT KNOWING HOW IT GOT FROM MY RIGHT TO IN FRONT OF ME WITH OUT ME HEARING OR SEEING IT) I TOOK AIM AT IT WITH MY RIFLE KNOWING IF I HIT IT ANYWHERE ON IT'S BODY IT WOULD GO DOWN (CAL. 45/70) BUT I JUST COULD NOT SHOOT IT.  SO I SHOT OVER IT'S HEAD. IT STOOD THIER FOR A MOMENT AND JUST STEPPED BACK IN THE WOODS. I NOW AT A VERY FAST PACE GOT OUT OF MY STAND AND WALKED HALF A MILE BACK TO MY TRUCK.  ALLTHOUGH THIS WAS A VERY,VERY,VERY LONG WALK AND THINGS IN THE WOODS WERE A LITTLE TO QUIET FOR ME IT WAS UNEVENTFULL. I PLAN A FIRST LITE TO GO BACK TO THE AREA AND LOOK FOR TRACKS OR OTHER SIGNS.

Activities of Witness: DEER HUNTING

Description of Creature: LARGE CREATURE IN EXCESS OF 8 FEET.

Other Notes:   I HAVE FOUND SEVERAL DEER CARCUS IN THE SAME GENERAL AREA, MOST RECENTLY ABOUT 1 MILE TO EAST OF THE ENCOUNTER.

ALL OF THE DEER HAD THEIR STOMACHS TORN OPEN, WITH NO APPARENT SIGNS OF A GUNSHOT WOUND OR FIELD DRESSING.ALSO A VERY LARGE DECLINE IN THE DEER POPULATION COMPARED TO PREVIOUS YEARS.

Additional Notes or  Comments:   HEAVY BREATHING SOUNDS AND LOW GRUNT CREATURE SEEMED TO BE SWAYING BACK AND FORTH IN A SMALL CLEARING ABOUT 40 YARDS IN FRONT OF ME.
