TIME:     Evening/Early A.M.

LOCATION:   Taos County, New Mexico

TERRAIN:    Mtns, canyons, and what is called dark timber.

OBSERVED:    On the 30 th of Sept, my hunting partner and I drove to the stated area to do some elk hunting for 5 days. We sat up camp off of a loggoing road about 2:30 pm and thought it would be a good idea to look around. We walked about a 1/2 mile up the logging rd and started back as it got dark.  About 25yrds from camp I stopped and asked if he could smell something, he said yes. The smell was very musky and strong,  I also noticed that the birds had stopped singing.  We didn't think any more about it and started supper and turned in for the night.  Around 1:30 or 2:00 am I woke with the feeling of being watched.  Nothing else happened for the next 2 days. On the 2nd of Oct. we moved camp about a 1/2 mile up and at the base of Gallegos Peak.  We set up camp and headed out to do some hunting nothing happened and we headed back to camp. The next morning we woke about 4:30 and headed out and covered alot of area, climbing hills and glassing valleys.  About 12:30 we returned to camp and had lunch.  After lunch we went in different directions.  I was about 3miles from camp and set on a log to take a rest. Thats when I heard this noise like I have never heard before. It was like a scream/howl, I have hunted all my life for deer, elk, bear, turkey, and mtn.lion, and have never heard anything like this.  It came from about 200 to 300 yards away and up from a ridge. I left the area slowly as not to spook any elk.  When I returned to camp my buddy was back and had started supper, thats when he said he had heard this strange noise, like two sticks being hit together about 50 yrd away from him. I ask if he had heard any thing else and he said no the wind was blowing pretty strongup on the peak.  I went to bed after eating and never said anything about the noise I heard.  The next morning we left camp again about 4:30-5:00 am he went back up the peak and I went back to the area I was in the night before. About 6:30-7:00am I was setting on a log farther up the logging road than the night before when I heard the scream/howl again this time closer than 200 yrd. away.  I left the area slowly and headed back to camp taking my time. I arrived at camp about11:30-12:00 and set down my gear, my buddy had a strange look again on his face.  He said he heard the sticks being hit together again but for a longer time.  This was just after daylight about 30 min before I heard the scream/howl. Nothing happened for the reast of the hunt.
