DATE:    02/??/95

TIME:     10:30 pm

LOCATION:   McCurtain County, Oklahoma

TERRAIN:    river bottoms

OBSERVED:    My little brother and I were setting up to catfish on the river when we heard something near the riverbank approx. 75 yd. away. There was no moon, quite cloudy and cold, and the saplings were semi-thick, ensuring visibility of no more than 10 ft without flashlights, which we did not feel we needed, so left at home, being very familiar with the area and intending to build a fire. We did not think too much of the noise at first, the area being rich in wildlife inc. deer, bear, razorbacks, etc. We simply noticed it and commented to each other, until we realized it was coming towards us with seeming intent, not randomly moving about or foraging behavior. This got our attention, as animals don't move towards two people talking in the wild. Not yet spooked, we simply tracked it's progress for about a minute more, then tried to get the attention of whoever was out there, having decided it must be a person. Yelling out caused it to pause, then shift direction moving up the slope. We then thought it was trying to go around us, thus avoiding confrontation, but then it became clear it was again moving towards us, now we were beginning to get spooked. We knew that bears were still hibernating, but were beginning to think that might be what was up the slope. I had a semi- auto .22 rifle, and fired a shot high into the trees to spook whatever was coming, it only paused. We now knew no human was up there and willing to get shot by two scared guys in the dark, yet it came on. Firing multiple shots quickly didn't even pause it, so I handed the rifle to my brother and grabbed some lighter fluid, sprayed the grass, and lit it up. Now the forward motion up the slope stopped for a few moments, before coming on slower when the flames died down. This time I sprayed half the can, lit it, and when it moved off back the direction it came from, we circled around to the car, which it had separated us from. No one else reported anything to my knowledge in the area, and no bears were spotted out for 3 more weeks after the incident.

Additional things: The animal's intentions were not overtly aggressive, just unnatural. It never made any vocalizations, or attempted to attack us in any way. The incident was simply un-nerving as it was unexplainable by us, and still is this many years later. I have since found that area is a hot bed of reports, so I submit this in case it was something more than we ever thought at the time.

Activities of Witness:   getting ready to fish

Description of Creature:  Did not move through the woods like anything either of us had ever heard, both of us growing up in the woods, especially at night. The ground was too rocky when we returned to try and find tracks the next day.

Other Notes:    Brother and I now live apart, and, when I asked him about it for the first time since it happened, he quickly responded it still bugged him what happened that night, and I asked him 13 years after the event. He has been to war twice since then, yet it still takes time in his thoughts.

Other (Informational or Encounter History in the General Area) Notes:    Quite a few

Additional Notes and or Follow up Comments N/A
