TERRAIN:

OBSERVED:       Here are several cases of possible BF related activities. In none of these cases was a BF actually seen: In the first case a co-worker of mine was with another guy and two girls. All were high school students. This happened in the Coburg Hills above Springfield OR, (Lane Co) at dusk on a summer evening about 1966.They had pulled over on a logging road and the two fellows had walked away from the car to relieve themselves. From the woods on the other side of a nearby clearing something started stomping around and breaking branches. Suddenly the two fellows saw a log come whipsawing towards them. It flew over their heads and landed near their car. He said that it was about 7 feet long and 10 inches thick. He figures it flew through the air 100 feet or more. The gals were hysterical and the guys scared so they left in a hurry.........

In the late nineties, this same fellow was hunting with his son near Elbow lake in the Waldo Wilderness, (Lane Co) when they came to a meadow just west of a butte and found three trees in a line, all broked off at about the 10ft level. Later that afternoon, they were on the east side of the same butte and again noticed three trees in a line all broken off at the 10 ft mark.

About ten years ago, I talked with an elderly couple who had homesteaded (back in the 60's), at a very remote location west of Quesnel, British Columbia. Their nearest neighbors were other homesteaders an hour or more away. They told of a strange occurence: Seems that they were returning from town, (several hours each way on a jeep track) and found the door to their cabin ripped open with great violence. Inside flour was scattered about and food taken. Guns, tools and other valuables were untouched. They figured it was a grizzly but what was puzzling was that their woodstove which weighed a great deal and had to be tipped on it's side to get it thru the door, had been removed from the cabin and was now in the front yard....It baffled them...

In the last case, a fellow was fly fishing in one of the tributaries of the Upper Willamette near Oakridge OR, (Lane Co) in the early 90s. In mid cast he heard a commotion and turned to see a panicked fawn come hurtling down an embankment, run towards him and stop BETWEEN his legs....He could've sat on it! He heard something moving in the woods above but saw nothing. After some time the fawn seemed to have calmed down and gradually moved away.Gotta wonder what could cause a fawn to see a human as a source of protection??? It was probably a cougar or Bear, but it's an interesting story nonetheless....
