DATE:    July 1, 1984

TIME:     10:30 pm

LOCATION:   Pike County, Pennsylvania

TERRAIN:    Wooded river bottom surrounded by scrub oak. The area we were in had been a church camp that I had attended as a kid and now the forest was growing in the previously mowed areas.

OBSERVED:    My wife and I were camping along the river. We were set up above the river with our fire between the top of the river bank and our tent. It was July and there was some light in the sky late into the evening. It was totally dark when I heard the first sound of a twig being snapped by something stepping on it. The sound came from behind us and was just outside the light cast by the fire. I have hunted and fished all of my life and I knew that something was out there and it was large enough to break sticks which did not make me comfortable at all. The sounds of sticks snapping were coming from different spots in reference to our campsite and I realized that whatever was out there was stalking us. The sounds of this animal was going from the top of the river bank to the south of us all the way around us to the top of the river bank to the north of us. This went on for about an hour when there was a stick broken that was loud enough to alert my wife. I had not said anything to her up to this point as I did not want to scare her. The area we were in is remote and we were alone. The closest road was several hundred yards away and there are no houses for miles in any direction. I told her that there was something out there and it had been there for awhile. She was too tired to really care. About a half hour after she noticed the sound we went into our tent to sleep. She fell asleep almost right away but I could not sleep. We layed there about ten to fifteen minutes when to the north of us this animal started to SCREAM at us. I would estimate it was about thirty to fifty feet away, about the same distance it was circling the campsite. The sound that came from this animal was truly blood curdling. The first sound that came to my ears was almost like a click as if it had snapped it's mouth open very quickly. This was followed by this unimaginably loud high pitched scream. There is no way any human could reproduce this sound. There was only one scream and it lasted about fifteen to twenty seconds. It reminded me of a territorial warning or growl and there was no doubt it was directed at us. The sound woke my wife she asked me what that was and I told her I did not know. I got out of the tent and built the fire up big. Needless to say I did not get any sleep that night. When the sun came up I looked for about an hour for sign but there had been a long spell of dry weather and there were no tracks. I could see where a large animal had gone through the weeds but that was all I found.

Activities of Witness:   Camping.

Description of Creature:  N/A

Other Notes:    I have fished since I was two and have hunted and trapped since I was four. I have camped hunted and hiked from Maine to Virginia and as far west as Iowa and Wisconsin. I have watched every animal show on TV from Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom to Animal Planet and I have never in my life heard, before or since, anything that sounded like this did. I thought that I had heard every type of animal that you could hear in the warm summer night of Pennsylvania, but I was wrong.

Other (Informational or Encounter History in the General Area) Notes:    I have a friend who knows people that trap in that area and they have heard strange noises that do not come from any of the known animals of that region. I have a hunting companion that has had an encounter in a swamp that is about twenty miles from where we were camping. His girlfriend was up in a tree stand hunting and a bigfoot came out of the swamp and came into the clearing her stand was overlooking. She said it was about eighty feet away and her view was not obstructed. She called my buddy on the radio and had him come over to her location. She refused to get down out of the tree until he came over. When he got there he asked her how big it was and she told him to go down by the tree the bigfoot was standing by and pointed to a branch up the trunk of the tree. He said it was nearly nine feet off the ground. I asked him about tracks and he told me there were depressions in the bog moss but no discernible tracks.
