DATE:    2004

TIME:     Sunset

LOCATION:   Shannon County, South Dakota

TERRAIN:    rolling grassy hills that skirt the badlands

OBSERVED:    First of all, this is a second hand story, but the tellers are trustworthy, and not braggarts, or liars.  I want to say that this is a general account of incidents that occurred a year or so ago. I strongly doubt that the Lakota Sioux indians would ever report such a thing as most interactions with white people only cause them suffering. That said, I live part time with a family in a very remote part of the Reservation (south of Interior, SD and north of Potato Creek.

several members of this family watched as this creature slowly walked across the distant hill (a matter of several hundred yards). It was in plain view, albeit distant. If I am not mistaken, they said it was very tall, and untypically thin.

It is no secret that this creature dwells in the area, because the indians have their OWN name for it: the Hairy Man.

The family I refer to, at first, thought it was a neighbor who lives high up on a hill in a trailer, but it because rapidly apparent that this creature was very tall, and covered in hair. I believe the sun was setting so there were no details regarding color or facial features.

Also, in a culture that often witnesses ghosts, spirits, and other oddities to western culture, a beast like this could be explained in a tremendously different context to them. IE a spirit...

I have been told of several sightings of the Hairy Man around Allen, South Dakota approximately 40 miles away as well.

the terrain is VERY brutal. Searing heat in the summer, frigid temperatures in the winter. the ground is littered with yuccas, cacti, ticks, chiggers, etc. There is  not much water around there either. There is sparse standard foods available too: ie berries, roots, etc. A survivalist of some sort could pull off a meager existance out there, but it would be quite a task.

There are cattle, horses, occasionally pigs, bobcats, some reports of mountain lions, lots of snakes, porcupines, etc.

Activities of Witness:   N/A

Description of Creature:  The details that I RECEIVED were scant. I believe that is due to the fact that there was a distance of several hundred yards involved and the figure appeared in more of a silhouette due to the hour of the day.

It was watching walking several hundred yards slowly across the crest of a rolling hill that is only covered in grasses, and it slowly descended this hill diagonally in the direction of the infinite labyrinth of the badlands.

Other Notes:    This "Hairy Man" has been sighted many times across the Reservation.

Additional Notes and or Follow up Comments Upon contact the witness had no additional information to add to this report.
