DATE:             January, 2001

TIME:              Late at night, around 3:00 a.m.

LOCATION:  Fentress County, Tennessee

TERRAIN:      Rugged Mountains, Heavily Wooded

OBSERVED:   I have been meaning to write and ask you if you've got any sightings of Bigfoot near the Big South Fork park area? I live in Fentress county, about 4 or so miles from the entrance to the park.  My reason for asking is that late January of 2001 I had heard something very different for about a 3 week period.  It was always late at night, around 3 am or so. I am not a person who gets to sleep easily so I was up listening to the radio. I would hear these screams, for the lack of a better word. It was so unusual I can't even describe them to you other than to say they were similar to the sounds horses would make as they fell down in those old western movies.  I'd not hear them every night, but it was as though whatever it was, was traveling, because I could hear the sounds close to the house, then farther off.

So one night it was raining and cold. It must have been around 37 degrees outside. I was laying in the bed when I heard the screams, or calls, again. I turned off the radio and listened. Whatever it was, there was at least 2 of them. One came closer to the house than it had before. I had a light on in the basement and the light could be seen thru the basement windows so maybe "it" was drawn to that. At that time there weren't any security lights on this end of the road. I fumbled my way thru the dark to the backdoor and opened it up. I could hear these 2 things calling to one another.

My geese, who usually honk at anything and everything, were dead silent. My dogs were too, as were the other dogs in the neighborhood. My one little small dog had her tail between her legs and was shaking wanting in the house. I flipped on the backporch light and whatever "it" was it didn't like that. It let out a scream so loud I could feel the vibrato in it's voice.  Needless to say, I changed my mind on getting dressed and sneaking out the front door with a $1.00 flashlight to get a glance at what was making these noises.

So when this thing did the loud call the 2nd one, who sounded like it was closer to the highway, called to it. Then went a series of calls which went back and forth until the one who was close to the house was back with the one closer to the road. The screams/calls were sorta like a grunting/squeal together. Like I say, I can't  even describe them they were so different. Not like any owls I've ever heard around here before, and I've lived here in this house since the end of 1989, and in Allardt before that. Being close to the woods and its sounds is nothing new to me.  I did hear the sounds once or twice more but they were never as close to the house again, then about mid February I heard them no more.

Last fall some people went across the road and built and have added flood lights and security lights that they leave on all night.  I had hoped that maybe these things would have come back again this past January but they didn't. I figured it was because of the area being lit up at night.

Now, I didn't mention what I had heard to anyone but my husband and my daughter.  The day after the one thing came close to the house, I went out into the woods behind the house to look for any signs of tracks. I didn't find them. I didn't see any in the drive either but take into account it was pouring the rain the night before, and part of the next day.  Then I decided to tell a friend of mine who was convinced I heard wild boars.  She still believes that to this day. My dad raised hogs for many years and I of course was around to help. I never heard hogs make these kinds of noises. I also never heard hogs call and answer back and forth to each other.

When I went looking for signs I didn't find any signs of the ground being tore up like boars do either.  I know a man towards the park who says he hears boars out in the woods, but from what he said there's a pack of them and they are fighting.  He even knows someone who killed one and barbeque'd it, so they are here, but just because they're here doesn't mean that's what I heard.

My neighbor who lives across the road was having problems with a weasel or possom getting into her chicken pen. She said that something was reaching thru the fence, grabbing the chickens, then killing them. I don't remember if she said they were intact, but she thought it was a weasel, coon, or possom. She's like myself in that her property is fenced in. At the time this happened only my front yard was unfenced. So, there were some dead chickens in the area at the time.

Also, most people here have dogs that aren't fenced in so the dog food would have been out and easily accessable to anything wanting to eat it.  As for my animals here, none of them have ever been attacked. The day after I heard them I went out to feed the horses and the older mare came to the barn as usual. The younger one didn't want to come and I had to go and lead her up to be feed. I wonder if Bigfoot likes all grain Purina horse feed?  Oh, and I must be sure to tell you that the area that I was hearing them in is a natural running path for deer. It's by a small stream and the deer's trail runs along the stream.  A few days after this happened I got some apples and put them in a bucket, then suspended the bucket in a tree. I left it for about a week or so then checked, but the apples were still there. I then got a piece of old bark and put it on top of a fence post. I'd check periodically to make sure it was still there. It was a week or so later that I checked it and the bark was gone. It wasn't on the ground either. I have since put another piece on the same post and it's been there for quite some time now.

ACTIVITIES OF WITNESSES:  In bed but not asleep

DESCRIPTION OF CREATURE:

OTHER NOTES:  I must tell you of a report that my uncle told me and my family about in the mid-1970's.  We lived in Smyrna at the time and came back here to visit my grandma and my uncle.  My uncle was a hunter at the time, and loved to read the newspaper.  He told us about an article that had been in the paper of a man who saw a Bigfoot I believe in Pickett State Park.  This man was either a hunter or camper and saw one while out in the woods. My uncle looked for the paper but couldn't find it at the time. Now, I'm not sure if the paper he was looking for was the local paper at the time, or if it was one of the bigger papers, but I definately remember him telling of a sighting and of him looking for about an hour for the paper. Needless to say he didn't find it. I must have been around 8 at the time, as I'm 35 now. This was back when this county was mostly undeveloped, and the population was very small. Big South Fork wasn't around yet.  There wasn't any cable tv and the only tv one could get here at the time was WBIR and WATE out of Knoxville, and that was if you could get the antenna positioned right. That to me is important because that means there wasn't a lot of outside media influences that could have influenced a person into telling of a bigfoot sighting.  Not much chance of any histeria going on.

OTHER SIGHTINGS IN THIS AREA:  Yes
