LOCATION:  Texas, Montgomery County FM 149

TERRAIN:  Wooded

OBSERVED:    The event occurred in far northwestern Montgomery County (as best I can remember) in, or
near the edge of the Sam Houston National Forest, near the Grimes County line.  I had just turned 15.  My brother, who was two years older than me, and I went biking and hiking along a dirt trail with our new friend, who had been born and raised in the area and knew it well.  He was between my brother and me in age.  My brother and I were new to the area and anxious to explore it with our ten speed bicycles.

The trail we went on went through, or along the edge of, private property for part of the way and our friend had to get permission from the owner before we could enter the trail.  I don't remember the exact details of where we entered and how we got to the rugged part of the trail. All I can remember is the three of us riding our bikes down a paved FM to a gate.  After we left the paved FM and went through the gate, we were able to ride our bikes down the dirt path for some distance.  I think we were going due east.  We stuck together, at first; then I got way ahead of the two boys.

By then, I was in a heavily wooded area and the trail had become so rugged and somewhat hilly that I had to push and pull my bike alongside me up and down the trail.  The trail had become very narrow, too, and was hard for me to follow at times.  I'm not sure what direction I was going in either.  There was a rising and falling embankment on my left side with a barbed wire fence and rolling pastures on the other side of the fence.  Beyond the pasture was forest.  To my right was about 15 feet of tall grass and weeds then a heavily wooded area with a shallow creek running through it, I think.  The trees were mostly pine.  It was afternoon and the
weather was perfect.

As I walked along the path, enjoying the scenery and the weather, I started to feel like there was something in the forest, to my right, watching me.  I tried to ignore the feeling and concentrate on the lovely flora around me but the feeling got worse and worse.  I told myself I was imagining things; what in the world could be out there to be afraid of?  News of the Fouke Monster hadn't reached our area yet and I was skeptical of Bigfoot's existence.  I began to get goose bumps that wouldn't go away despite the warm weather.  I could feel adrenaline start to surge through my body though there had been no sort of stimulus to elicit such a response.  I
listened for familiar sounds, particularly birds, to reassure myself that nothing was wrong.  I heard no reassuring sounds.  The boys were farther back up the trail and couldn't hear me calling.  I was so frightened I couldn't call that loud anyway.  All I could hear was the sound of twigs and branches snapping in the woods alongside me.  The sounds kept up with me as I made my way along the path.  I became so frightened that I stopped several times to see if the snapping would stop and it did, pretty much.  No, it wasn't me stepping on twigs and not realizing it was me making the noise.  I had a very strong mental impression that there was "someone" watching me and following me and was contemplating coming out of the woods to grab me.  There seemed to be more than one of them after a while, also.  One was keeping pace with me and the other was about 30 feet in front of the pacer.  I can't accurately describe the terror I felt.  I was fully prepared to try to get through a barbed wire fence, with or without my ten speed, to at least try to make a run for safety across the pasture should the thing(s) try to pounce on me.

I finally turned around and waited for the two boys to catch up with me.  They finally did and were deep in conversation, oblivious to the world around them.  I could still feel the thing(s) watching the three of us and trying to decide if it (they) would attack.  We came out of the woods onto a paved FM (FM 149) and rode our bikes back home.

Description of Creature:   N/A

Activities of Witness:  We were all just riding our bikes and walking when the trail got rough.  The boys were
deep in conversation and apparently didn't see or hear anything they thought was unusual.  They
didn't seem to be aware of the eerie silence.

Other Notes:  There was an eerie silence.

Other Other Notes:  The three of us would drive into Huntsville once a week to eat hamburgers and watch a
movie.  We always rode in our new friend's old Chevy pick-up truck.  One evening, between about 11 o'clock and midnight, we were driving back home from Huntsville on FM 149.  We were in the Sam Houston National Forest.  The moon was between new and first quarter, or second quarter and new, because it was very dark.  Plus, there are no street lights in the forest.  We passed a pick-up truck that our new friend recognized.  He pulled over to the same side of the road the other pick-up was on but yards up from it.  He went down and talked to the person, a Baptist deacon, who had walked straight back into the forest, unarmed.  He obviously wasn't there to hunt and he wasn't walking straight back into the forest as far as he could possibly go just to
relieve himself, as our friend explained later.  Our friend came back grinning and shaking his head but wouldn't explain why the deacon made a habit of driving into the forest late at night, pulling over, and walking straight back into the forest as far as he could go.  My friend and I saw him returning from one of his late night
expeditions a second time and I wanted to talk to him myself but my friend wouldn't let me.  My friend kept telling me that the deacon was crazy but wouldn't go into detail.

A couple of months after school began (as best I can remember), a class mate, who sat behind me in one of our classes, came to school one morning looking shocked.  He told anyone he could get to listen to him that he had gone walking in the woods late the previous night (insomnia, most likely) and had met the devil.  We didn't believe him and we teased him but he didn't care that we didn't believe him.  I questioned him about what the devil looked like and what he had said and my classmate told me that the devil was about seven feet tall, more or less, brown (I forgot if he said the devil had long hair), looked sort of like a gorilla, and spoke in a deep,
guttural voice.  The devil didn't say much either; he just made deep monosyllable responses to my class mate's chatter as they sat on fallen logs.  Then the devil got up and walked back into the forest.  None of us knew what to make of his story.  We expected him to say that he had consumed a six pack then saw a big red, cloven-hooved critter with horns, a tail, and pitchfork, who tried to get him to sign his soul away.
