DATE:    June 2002

TIME:     Mid-Afternoon

LOCATION:   Rusk County, Texas

TERRAIN:    Wooded

OBSERVED:    We had recently moved to Carthage, Tx in Oct of 01. My son and I rode to Longview Tx to the mall just to kill part of the day. We headed back home shortly after lunch. We topped a small hill and we both seen what we thought was a deer step out of the woods on our left. But it seemed to sit down. In what seemed to be one motion it was now "squatting" on its back legs leaning forward on it's front "limbs" in the middle of the highway. It seemed to be looking away from us to start with, then turned to look at us approaching. It seemed to turn at the waist more then just turn it's head as you could see the shoulders rotate. It jumped up and cleared the road. When it came up, we realized how big this "thing" was. It was reddish-brown, black-faced. Long flowing and shaggy hair. It was a beautiful sunny day and the color of this creature was brilliant shinning in the sun. We never saw it stand or run, just kinda sprang with it's back legs. Not sure exactly what we saw, But appeared to be gorilla like in appearance.  I was beginning to break by the time it left the highway....maybe 100 yds away. We do know one thing, it was an animal that very much seemed out of place to be seen there. And very BIG !!

Activities of Witness:   Had been to the mall in Longview, Texas and was driving back home. It was mid-afternoon on a beautiful bright summer day.

Description of Creature:  It was reddish-brown in color, long shaggy hair completely except for a black face. We did not get close enough to make out features. It was very large when it jumped up. We never saw it run on two or four legs. But it was very quick an agile. It had extremely long front limbs. With it in a "squatting" position leaning forward on it's front limbs, it pretty much looked like a very big gorilla. But when it leaped you could tell it had very big, muscular rear legs.

Other Notes:    N/A

Other (Informational or Encounter History in the General Area) Notes:    We heard that a very large African American gentleman was going fishing on a sandbar on the Sabine river after work late one evening. He was walking from his home a mile or so away. He had gone through a stand of woods (trail) down to the sand bar when some more gentleman up the river heard him scream. When they got to him he was getting up apparently from fainting. He said he thought he had heard something behind him and was looking back. When he turned around to speed up, he said "I damn near ran into it" I have seen this man, but do not know him personally. He is 6'8" and 380 lbs. A local tv station from Tyler came to town after more sightings and walked around the woods all night. This man is or was an outdoorsman through and through. He loved hunting and fishing and had spent many nights camping alone on the river. I never heard him describe what he saw. When asked, he would just shake his head and say "you wouldn't believe me"! As far as I know this man wasn't interviewed on tv, nor do I recall where the reporters were. This was in the summer of 02 in Panola County Texas.
