TIME:           Between noon and two P.M.
 

LOCATION: Upshur County, Texas
 

TERRAIN:    Wooded
 
 

OBSERVED:       I was 17 or 18 at the time.  My friend and I decided to go squirrel hunting.  Squirrel hunting season had just started and I usually can bring in several squirrels so that is what we decided to do that day.  We had gone to an open, wooded field and was walking through there when we came face to face with a creature I had never seen before.

This creature was asleep under a structure of dead, small tree limbs and mounds of dead leaves piled over the top of it.  This mound looked to be about 3 to 4 ft high.  It frightened us so bad seeing an unknown creature like that we didn't stay long to observe too much but ran straight home.  We both had guns but did not even think to use them.

What I did get a look at was an animal, a human looking, ugly thing about 6-7 foot tall, the best I could tell.  I am 5'6" tall myself and it was taller than me, I am sure.  This animal had no odor, no smell about it, but maybe we didn't stay around long enough?  It was lying on its back, just exactly like a human would do in sleep. Its legs were stretched out straight, and it had very big feet.  Its arms didn't appear to be any longer than to its hips, but the way it was laying, I can't be sure.  It's eyes was closed.  I did not see any evidence of it breathing though, but as I said, didn't stay around very long once we saw it.  It was a light brown in color, long hair around its head and hairy all over its body except the feet did not have any hair on them.  We simply walked up on this "thing" and took a good look and both of us went white as a sheet and ran all the way back to the house.  We told some family members about it but they didn't believe us. I have never told anyone much about it because I have been afraid of being ridiculed.  I'm just glad to know that there are people who believe me and that I can talk to them about it.  I might be interested in joining the GCBRO at a future time and go out on hunts with them here in TX.
 

ACTIVITIES OF WITNESS(ES):    We were walking through an open field with trees, going squirrel hunting.
 

DESCRIPTION OF CREATURE:       The animal was at least 6-7 foot high, if standing.  It had long hair around its head, light brown in color, hairy over the rest of its body.  I didn't see any patches of skin, except its feet, which were really big, were not hairy.  I did not see its hands, however. As it was lying there, the arms seemed to only reach to its hips.
 

OTHER NOTES:       The hut like shelter it had was open in nature.  It was not like the animal had crawled underneath a bunch of leaves or something, as the top was not touching the animal as it laid on its back.  I am just glad we did not wake it up.  Still, I don't know whether it was dead or not as I didn't stay around long enough to even watch it breathe.
 

OTHER OTHER NOTES:   About four months later, it was published in Upshur County that a woman who was driving had hit a bigfoot crossing the road.  If I remember right, a pair of bigfoot crossed the road in front of her, and she said one was male, the other female and she hit one of them.  It didn't seem to hurt the creature any, she told.  That's all I can remember about that, but it was published in the newspapers or broadcasted in some way.

OTHER NOTES FROM TELEPHONE INTERVIEW: (Additional information)

New information on Upshur County Bigfoot sighting.

The eyewitnesses had walked approximately 4 to 5 miles into this area.  They were in a 300 to 400 acre wooded area.  The eyewitness now lives 3-4 miles away from this area.

I questioned him on whether or not he had gone back after finding the bigfoot laying there asleep in the shelter.  He said NO WAY and he has NOT been back since that time.  He stated he was a good hunter and still hunts, but has never attempted to go back to that area since that time.  For years he has hunted the property in front of his house instead of behind it.....  That what he saw that day is something he can never forget.  Stated that few people have moved into this area since then and the place is basically like it was.  The nearest HWY is Hwy XXX, and named these two roads nearby, XXXXXXX Road and XXXXXXX XXXXX Road.

I questioned him more about the description of the animals face.  The mouth was closed, said it looked ordinary, but was across the face but longer and slimmer than a humans lips.  Nose protruding slightly, looked more like an ape's nose than a human's nose.  The face was fully covered with hair, as there was NO areas he could see that it did not have some hair of some length or thickness on its face, but still states he did not stare long as he was too terrified.  He stated he could not tell if it was male or female, and the top of the head did appear like a gorillas but it was rounding and not cone shaped that he could tell.  He said it had so much hair on its head he could not see the ears.

He was told by his folks it was just an old hermit laying there in that structure.  He described the structure more to me.  He said the shelter was built like a teepee, was at least 6 foot long, and already stated yesterday it was 3 to 4 foot high.

Stated man's name who was with him was XXXX XXXXXXX, and had not seen him in 15-20 years and had lost touch with him.

Mr XXXXXXX is considering trying to draw a sketch of this shelter and to have his step son scan and e-mail it.

He also stated that they were just walking a while, being quiet, then they would talk a little bit, then walk some more.  He does not remember if they were talking at the time they walked up on it.   They had walked up to where the feet were laying inside the shelter, the animal on its back.  He remembers saying what in the hell is it?  He did not bend over nor look into the shelter in any way as it scared him too badly.  He looked directly down on the creature from where he stood. They both wheeled and ran and never looked back, and don't even remember going across fences real well on the way back, running all the way home.  Said they were very deep into the woods.

UPDATE

3/25/01 11:45 am
Location:  approx XX miles of Ore City Texas.  Upshur County.
 

I met XXXXX XXXXXXX and his stepson, XXXXX XXXXX, on site.  During a continuing interview with XXXXX XXXXXXX, he mentioned hearing strange sounds in the woods surrounding the farm where he grew up.  He mentioned hearing growling, tree-knocking, and strong nasty odors at times along with the feeling of being watched on many occasions.  He also related a story of a sighting in the area by a man who grew up with him.  According to the Witness, this man had a sighting in 1990.  He said he would try to contact the other man and get more details.

A brief investigation of the area produced a rather obvious tree marker that appeared to be one year old.  (Took photo.)  The marker was a sweet gum tree approximately 3 –  4 inches in diameter and 20 ft tall.  It had been broken at the 6 ft level and pushed over away from the intersection of two cow trails where it was located.  Gum trees are rather resilient hardwoods, and no other trees in the immediate area showed signs of damage from any natural phenomena.  The tree was strategically located at the beginning of a heavily wooded area, which was located 75 yards behind the old house place location.  During the walk around, The Witness commented that the area had changed drastically and, due to timbering several yrs ago, he was unable to locate the exact spot where his sighting occurred.  We walked down to a creek Approximately 400 yds behind the old house location.  Observed what might have been a foot impression (took photo.)  No other suspected BF signs were observed.

While we were investigating this incident, some local people told us of a couple down the road named XXXXX who was experiencing strange occurrences around their house.  We investigated further.  (See the http://www.gcbro.com/TXupshur0003.html  report.)
