DATE:    February 1925

TIME:     Late Evening

LOCATION:   Forrest County, Mississippi

TERRAIN:    Pine Wood Forest

OBSERVED:    This story was told to me by my late grandmother. My grandmother was 5 years old at this time. She, her father, mother and two older sisters, ages 7 and 9 were in the bed with their mother. Their father had went into town by horse for business, an over night trip. My grandmother said that their home was a two room gable-roofed wood cabin with a fireplace. They had a dog. They heard the dog barking. The barking became more intense and then became frantic, as the dog was whining and howling. They could tell the dog was running away as the dog howling faded in the distance. The door was wooden planks, butted together and braced. They used a chair to jam against the door to prevent entering from the outside as they had no latch.  She could hear someone moving on the wooden porch. Then she said she could hear the creature trying to open the door.  She remarked that she and her sisters/mother were paralyzed with fear and remained quiet.  The door was finally wrested free of the chair's bind on it and swung open. The creature came in. She said she could here it breathing, that it seemed to sniff the air at intervals. The creature eased over to the bed and laid down across the foot of the bed at a right angle to them. She said she was too afraid to raise up and look. The creature laid there for a moderate period of time before it got up and left. She said it left the door open, that it was very cold and a draft was coming in the front door. She said they were too scared to get up and close the door. She said they never saw it, nor heard it again.  She never mentioned if they found any footprints, etc, outdoors.

Activities of Witness:   They were in their home. It was a home invasion.

Description of Creature:  She said the creature was very hairy, the hair being course and long, tall as it extended over both sides of the bed, heavy, as their legs went to sleep as it laid on them. She also said that it had a terrible odor like sulphur that was very strong. She said it was similar to a polecat's musk. She couldn't tell of the posture or much visual features as it was very dark and they were afraid to look up.  She described it's breathing as deep and raspy She said it walked upright and had long arms.

Other Notes:    Grandmother was not one to spin yarns. She mentioned this to us, her grandchildren a few times. It captivated me. It was told to me several years before the Bigfoot sightings became published. I am familiar with the area where it occurred and know where the home site was. This story is not well known outside of my family. My grandmother and the sisters whom were with her are dead.  You may contact me at your leisure if you wish to discuss this further.

Other (Informational or Encounter History in the General Area) Notes:    She said that residents in the area had heard howling and screams in the woods and that the residents had animals that became upset, whining and howling. They lived far away from any neighbors, several miles or so.  However, she didn't recall anyone confessing of an encounter.

Additional Notes and or Follow up Comments N/A
