LOCATION:   Raleigh County, West Virginia

TERRAIN:    National Forest

OBSERVED:    Back in 2003, I was visiting my girlfriends mother in West Virginia. This was near Beckley, West Virginia. We had went in the woods on a National Forest road, that leads to a creek with a bridge over it. This location has a few hiking trails, along with a fast moving creek that has several water falls. Also being very secluded. Being from Louisiana this was like being a kid in a candy store. Me and my two children were playing in the creek while my girlfriend went hiking.
My two children were playing for quite a while in the water falls, I had decided to go and check on my girlfriend and her mother back at the truck. While I was walking down the road. I found a small bird with no feathers going like crazy across the road. Seeing how this bird was going to die anyway, I picked him up to show my small two year old who was at the truck with his nanna. When I picked this bird up. I smelled a horrible smell. Sort of like wet fur, sweet fermented flowers with garbage mixed. I looked up the mountain thinking I might be smelling a bear. I looked for a few minutes but due to the thick cover I didn't see anything. I went to the truck carrying this bird. Something had knocked this bird out of the nest, but what? When I got there, I put this bird out to show my girlfriend who had just arrived at the truck. She was Sweet and breathing hard. Needless to say she screamed and ran. I asked her mother what was wrong with her and she said she had just been chased by a bear and ran about a mile down the the trail back to the truck. Not trying to scare them. I thought about what I had smelled back down the road. I figured we should get back to the kids. So we loaded up and went got the kids and left. Had I known what I had smell. I would have done a little more investigating at the scene. I'll always wonder if that was a bear or was it something else. Oh my girlfriend described the same smell. And she wasn't chased she just kept smelling it and thought it was chasing her. She never saw anything, just the smell.
